Product reliability is equal in importance with product impact or arguably without peer. It impacts significantly on retain-ability and therefore the products ecological profile (def’n of profile, being product longevity and landfill probability).
Monitoring factory quality assurance processes and performing our own quality control has more business focus than any other single task.
We employ a multifaceted approach, weighted to the front of the process, which involves:
- Understanding the product. Product knowledge based on experience and backed up with product and process research.
- Questions. Questioning both our client and our factories requirements and processes, respectively. Endeavouring to understand whether everything that needs to be considered has been.
- Product specifications. Setting detailed product specifications even for stocked and standard items. Focusing and highlighting in the specifications, materials and processes which are consistent with “best practice”.
- Relationships. Continuously looking to establish and form long term reliable supply relationships.
- Chinese referees. Using existing factories to act as referees to new potential factory partners. This provides the factory confidence and also provides the opportunity for us to reinforce through an independent party our quality standards.
- Penalties. Setting out clearly all penalties that will be incurred for failure to meet standards / obligations. We make it crystal clear what our testing regime will be from the outset along with our expectations and the resulting penalties that will be incurred in the event our quality control detects even slight faults. We then enforce penalties.
- Quality over price. Indicating and continuously reinforcing through action, that quality is our first priority, not price.
- Payment terms. Adhering to payment terms that allow us to apply appropriate pressure, where necessary, to focus manufacturers on appropriate quality assurance / re-work measures / standards.
- Measures. Identifying the measures that are going to allow us to quickly and accurately measure factory performance and identify issues.
- Quality control pre-production sample(s). Performing detailed quality control on the pre-production samples. Then requesting our client to perform “in field” reviews of the product. Accumulating the results of both sets of tests and modifying the specifications and or issuing notices of defect to the factory, as relevant.
- Quality control. Setting a realistic but rigourous quality control program (QC). Incorporating:
- Controlling the QC process not outsourcing it. That is not to say that processes are not performed by others but that we control all decision making and set the agenda at all times.
- Being picky about who we use to assist us. The gate keeper cannot be “just anyone”.
- Enforcing our standing policy of requiring all faults to be re-worked1 regardless of whether they are noticeable and regardless of whether it / they affect the products capability to fulfill its purpose.
- Perform, where relevant, inspections through our Australian based staff, regardless of the cost of doing so.
- Employing, where relevant, independent experts to perform scientific based tests.
- Pride. Lastly and most importantly, emotionally, financially and as a matter of pride taking personal responsibility for producing the best possible product outcome for the cost profile.
1 With the one exception of where the fault is unnoticeable or insignificant and the re-work holds higher product deterioration risk than the benefit of the re-work.
